Home@Stirling - IKEA KALLAS seat bench for play area

$

I've sold my IKEA outdoor rattan chairs away and did a seat bench for my little boys. The seating capacity remains more or less the same and I gained more storage under the bench this way!! It's definitely a more storage seating solution for a new play area for the kids.

Above: Here's how it looked BEFORE and AFTER the seating bench is finally completed after weeks of procrastinating at getting the fabric and bringing it to a shop to have it upholstered.

And because I'm quite the shopoholic, although i went into the fabric shop knowing I only had one kind of fabric to buy, I ended up buying 3 different fabrics! One for the seating bench and 2 others for cushions. I'm really pleased with the origami japanese print one which I've customised a cushion cover for it. The other one is a really cute giraffe print which I haven't taken a photo of it here...perhaps another day.

At the shop I was really debating about whether to have a teal or a grey print for the seating bench. After a really really long while, I decided to get the grey one and I'm quite pleased it turned out ok. Guess I don't really want too many colours in the play area huh.

Here's a close up on the seating bench fabric which i had gotten. The baskets are from IKEA. Currently they are all empty!!! So i really have loads of storage space for toys in time to come.
Jules already trying out his new seating bench! He was really excited about it and he loved the window sill a lot. He makes believe that the window sill is a train track and he "choo choo"s his trains there.
Jules and his thomas train by the window sill
i wouldn't call it an IKEA hack since many people have already done it and the kallas shelving serves more or less like a storage solution and the whole thing was not totally transformed into something quite different, it's simply a KALLAS shelving unit with a cushy top. :)

So yeah.
Hope everyone enjoyed this little post on my home!

Hello there!

The painting colours have been chosen and so are the laminates! We are all set to zoom zoom zoom!
Above: Whole kitchen, balcony, living and dining floor tiles are all laid and being protected. The whole place still looks quite worn out and old, but things will change once the painting is done!
Above: a look at the open kitchen. Can't see a thing huh! cos all the flooring is being protected so I so you guys just have to wait till the final photos to see everything. hee hee. suspense suspense!
Above: Pattern tiles are all done up nicely here!

notice any differences?
Yes! The old textured red walls are being plastered over. And the whole flat's windows and grilles have been removed and new black framed windows are being installed over the week!!!
 Kitchen windows
master bedroom windows. haha, our dear contractor has left the old grilles lying neatly by the side of the wall
 door frames all in!
Looking good as a new wall here before the kitchen entrance
Window grilles near entrance are being left there for security. Going to remove them later once the new grilles arrive.
this week, electrical works are going to start!

Reno@HollandAve - Electrical works

The guys are out in the living going through the electrical works, so I'm here snapping some photos back here in the bathroom and kitchen. So this week, the electrical works are starting. The electrician has started to pull some wires over the last 2 days... here are the photos!
kitchen - loads of coloured wires here!

master bedroom - wires all running along the ceiling edge
bedroom 2 - more wires running

electrician and hubs, deciding where to put the DB because of the beam above the main door.
Took a picture here to show everyone that old flats are actually not straight. See the beam from the windowon the left? It's quite thick and how it tapers off to the right, becoming narrower once it reaches the wall? Some times people will ask our contractor to rectify the ceiling or floor tiles as they notice that from one end to the other, the width of the ceiling or floor tiles are not the same, this is not because of workmanship, but rather it's the walls that are not perpendicular or the ceiling is not perpendicular. It's true. Hard to explain once the cove lights are up or floor tiles are done. So this is one really good example for everyone to see!

Some times, you can see this "tapering" effect above the windows too! So it's not the windows are not straight...it's actually the flat that is not "straight".
minor plastering along the edges of the floor after the skirting has been removed.

The entrance floor tiles are done, but I think I need to talk to the contractor on some minor details over here. uh hem..
The electrician was there when we went there in the morning. The electrical works was about 30% completed. Most of the loose wires for the lower floor has been pulled and he was working upstairs when we got there.

The railings were up over the week. So the tiles are progressively being laid.

Close up on the upper floor where the threads are being laid with wood tiles.

Reno@Holland Ave - The electrical works are 80% completed.

 New DB in!
All the loose wirings have been pulled.
Air con was installed over the week. The thing about A/C is they have awful big trunking as the pipes are insulated and making them thicker. Plus there's the condensate pipes too.
Look at the size of the trunking compared to the electrical ones! The electrial ones are skinny!!! As we are not going to have any customised wardrobe in this room, we can't use the wardrobe to hide the trunking. Guess the only way is to box up.
Master room - Good thing! we are going to have a study table here to "hide" the A/C trunking at the window area.

so much for the weekend!

coming week, the cove lights will be up and painting works will start too!

hello there!
so sorry for the lack of updates on our Ancilla project last week cos hubs was so busy talking to the electrician that he forgot to snap some pictures! Anyway so this week the photos are double!!! So enjoy the quick progress tour.

Above: the new wall at the kitchen has been plastered and it's all ready for a new coat of white paint!
The entire living room's cove lighs are completed already
The air con was installed over the week too. All the A/C trunking are boxed up too.
New kitchen entrance, plastered up, ready for the door installation. But this will be at later stage cos the carpentry got to go in first! The bigger the opening, the easier it is for our carpentry carcass to go in. We wouldn't want to spoil our new lovely kitchen door with all the workmen going in and out!
New kitchen wall - fully tiled with the same original HDB wall tiles. You can't even tell that it's totally new!!
Bedroom 3 - cove light holders are up. You might be wondering what is that loose piece of wire dangling from the ceiling. It's for the ceiling fan.
Here's another view of the bedroom 3 with the new aircon unit above the door.
common bath - new ceiling!!! No more ugly plastic grid things above my head!!!
Bedroom 2 - Cove light holders completed
Another view of Bedroom 2 - Aircon is up too!
Master bathroom - ceiling up! Small Aircon trunking which we can't hide. Can see? It's on the left of the small window!
Master room - cove light and aircon up!
Goodness!! we are nearing to the end already!!!This week, the painting is going to start and then the carpentry is going to start off site and within the next 2-3 weeks, we will see the carpentry! So fast! Exciting times now.

Hope your weekend went well and stay tune for more posts to come!!!

Reno@Kim Keat - Final Photos (Master bedroom edition)

 Hello there!

I reckon quite a few of my faithful readers are just eagerly waiting for the final photos of our reno at Kim Keat. And here are some peektures of the beautiful master bedroom to share with everyone. As the room was in an odd little shape, not a perfect square or rectangle, we had to find a wall to anchor the bed and fabricated an integrated headboard and storage bed to go with it. The headboard has a long linear horizontal shelf to put books, alarm clock and powerpoints to charge mobiles before sleeping. And by the side, we have catered 2 bedside lamps which the owner has gotten the stylish artemide wall lamps to add more character to the bedhead.

here's a full frontal view of the bedhead and the symmetry of the 2 beautiful artemide lamps.

Side view to show the storage bed drawers under the mattress. Perfect for linen! So no space is wastage. The owner has chosen the loveliest wood grain that is very soothing and the colour makes it very comfortable to the eye. Perfect for a resting area.

Considering that we spent 8 hours out of our 24 hours sleeping, or one third of our lives sleeping, the bed area is definitely a very important part of the design for every single home.

The master room is just basking in natural daylight! Looks wonderfully bright in the day. This is how it really looks when we visited the room in the morning.

Pretty barn doors. Guess what is behind them?

One leads to a standing vanity dresser

And the other barn door leads to the master bath.

Just came back from talking to the carpenter this afternoon to take some site measurements as well as to explain the carpentry to him. Off site fabrication will start once we pass the drawings to him tonight. Air con is going to be up next week, followed by all the partition walls and false ceiling.

Can't wait for all these to finish before we can start on the painting works. Once that is done, we can give the whole place a good clean before the carpenter comes in to do the works!

The master room has 2 separate wardrobes located along 2 different walls with the master bed as the centre of the vision line. To the end of a corner window,  a small study area was placed for some night work and storage. The TV is hidden in one of the wardrobes with ample storage behind the tv to make full use of the deep wardrobe space.

Ensuite - wall hung WC with vanity area and a long shower cubicle.
Counter space above the WC to put all things nice!

Loads of storage for the master bath to put all the necessary items within reach.

Let's take a look at the Princess' room!
As the room was not in a usual square or rectangle, we have done up a simple study area at the funny corner to address the room. The design for all study table are kept minimal - stationery drawers and top cabinets for storage. The laminates which we have chosen were the same for all the bedrooms to keep a consistent look throughout.

The room is decorated with coloured stickers, adding character, youth and a touch of femininity to the space. All in all - A very sweet and simple girl's room.

A walk along the corridor.
Pattern tiles to give depth and texture to the overall white space, accentuated by a row of tracklights above.
At the beginning of the corridor leads to the study window area, bringing light into the area.
 Here's where the owner works!
ledge along window area finished in the same wood laminate as the study table.
The common bath is done up the same way as the master bath. A special request from the owners to have the shower wall located at the end of the shower area instead of having it together with the shower rose.

That pretty sums up our home tour at Reno@Bt Timah.
Have a great long weekend everyone!

a tactile experience.
come. walk with us!
The entrance proper - a very modern simplistic black gate versus the wainscoting looking door with an old fashioned door handle. The floors are finished in a raw cement screed bordering a monochrome peranankan tiles, adding much visual simulation to the eyes. Drawing lesser attention, the shoe cabinet is done up with an overall black frame with lourved doors for the much needed ventilation that is required.

The dining area was crafted out from an in between space. The big challenge at the start was the many flying beams across this space and the need to close up the kitchen yet maintaining its visual connectivity. To create a nordic look, white washed wood flooring coupled with brick texture wall, white and neutral tones were kept in mind throughout the entire conceptualization of the design.

a grey accent wall creates an anchor for the eyes.
